Wilton Jackson is a writer for Sports Illustrated as well as an adjunct journalism professor. Jackson previously worked as a breaking news and trending reporter for The Clarion Ledger, a Gannett newspaper that is part of the USA TODAY Network.
Jackson received his first Master's degree in mass communication with an emphasis in news and sports reporting (broadcast, print, online, digital) from Louisiana State University in May 2019. He completed his second Master's degree in sports science with an emphasis in sports management from Jackson State University in May 2023.
Jackson received his Bachelor's degree in multimedia journalism with a minor in Spanish from the University of Southern Mississippi in May 2015. Some of Wilton's previous experience includes WSB-TV (CMG Atlanta), HBCU GameDay, ESPN, USA TODAY, HubCity Spokes (Scripps Howard Intern), WAFB-TV and the Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA).
In 2014, Jackson created the Wilton C. Jackson Eagle Award for Adhiambo Elementary School, the Learning Institute for Children, where he attended as a child. He started the award to recognize a student who faces obstacles, challenges and manages to rise above them all in the true fashion of a mighty eagle. To date, there have been five (5) recipients for the award.
Jackson attended Jim Hill High School, located in Jackson, Mississippi from August 2007 to May 2011. During his time at Jim Hill, Jackson served as a member of several organizations, including the JHS Student Government, the National Honor Society, Beta Club and the Jim Hill Marching Band of Distinction. Jackson also earned several honors, including being named Mr. Senior, being a recipient of the Jim Hill Award, a top-10 scholar and an inductee into the Jim Hill High School Student Hall of Fame.
The University of
Jackson dedicated a large portion of his time to Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. Along with a close friend, the two decided to create the Garner-Jackson Annual Phi Eta Sigma Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established to promote and encourage high academic achievement, community service, and leadership among high achieving Phi Eta Sigma members at the University of Southern Mississippi.
